Day 40

Leviticus 24-25

Chapter 24

Following instructions for keeping the lamp burning and baking bread, we get the famous ‘eye for an eye’ penal code (v 20), and this little gem:

Leviticus-2416

Chapter 25

The words from Leviticus 25:10 “proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof” are inscribed on the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, and were used by abolitionists in their fight against slavery. And yet slavery is condoned in verses 44-46.

According to a Jewish reference site Chabad, the Jubilee Year mentioned in Leviticus 25 is currently not celebrated because the Jewish people have not all been reunited in Israel.
