Deuteronomy 29-30

These two chapters form the concluding section of Moses’ speech. FINALLY! Quick read – same old stuff, review of covenant, importance of obedience, blah blah blah. Ready, get set, and into the Promised Land (finally!)

But read 30:15-20 – Moses sure sounds like a lot of preachers today; in essence saying “Obey or you’ll go to hell – but it’s your choice”. Sure – like since when is that a choice?

Note that as part of the conclusion of Moses’ parting speech, these verses instruct the Israelites to follow god’s commandments so that they will live long and prosper. That’s what Moses means by the words ‘choose life’. His words are completely unrelated to today’s abortion debate. But tell that to the evangelicals who like to quote v 19 way out of context.
