The Bear Clan Patrol – Reclaiming Our Streets

April 13 @ 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm

At our April meeting we welcome Bear Clan co-founder and executive director James Favel as our speaker. James was raised in the Elmwood neighbourhood of Winnipeg and has worked as a bouncer and a truck driver. He was inspired to revitalize the Bear Clan Patrol after the death of a relative whose name should be familiar to all of us – Tina Fontaine.

The Bear Clan Patrol provides an invaluable service to our city. We’ve all heard about its street patrols and the large numbers of used needles its members pick up. In 2017, when forest fires forced the evacuation of northern communities, the Bear Clan was there to help. Bear Clan volunteers receive first aid training and, since the opioid crisis, many of them are qualified to use naloxone kits as well. Beginning with just 12 volunteers in 2015, there are currently well over 1500 men and women involved with the Patrol on a volunteer basis. The Bear Clan is growing because its methods of community outreach work. Today, 22 communities across four provinces have adopted its program, including, Regina, Kenora and Thunder Bayto name just a few.

The Bear Clan is changing minds, changing people, and changing the world for the better. We hope you’ll join us to learn more about it, at what will be a timely and thoughtprovoking meeting.

Location (Note: This meeting is at the U of W)

Our meeting is in room 2M70, the Board Room on the second floor of Manitoba Hall, located on Balmoral St between Portage and Ellice (see the U of W Building map).

Important! The entry door on Balmoral is locked on Saturdays. Enter from Portage Ave through Centennial Hall (if you’re on Portage facing the university, it’s right behind the ‘castle’). If you have mobility issues, you may also want to check the Accessibility map.

Food

We’ll have a pot of coffee on before the meeting (BYOMbring your own mug).

There are no kitchen facilities in the meeting room, but we can still get together for dinner (or just to socialize; the eating part is totally optional). Food is allowed in the room as long as we don’t leave a mess. So bring your favorite sandwich, or take-out, or last night’s leftovers, or a plate of cookies to share, or anything else that will make you happy.

If you’re looking for take-out food nearby, there are several options:
– On the north side of Portage – Garbonzo’s Pizza, (in the AnX building at Portage and Balmoral)
– On the south side of Portage – Stella’s (in Buhler Centre); Vietnamese and sushi restaurants, and a Subway.

Parking

There’s on-street parking if you’re willing to walk a bit. There are also quite a few paid lots in the area (see Parking map)Consider sharing a vehicle (and the parking fee) with someone else from your part of town. If you need a ride or want to carpool, let us know and we’ll see if there’s someone else from your area going.
