Morden Outreach 2017
Morden Outreach 2017
August 25 @ 10:00 am - August 27 @ 5:30 pm
It just wouldn’t be summer without HAAM’s annual trek out to Morden for their annual Corn and Apple Festival. Yes, we will be back there in our booth again this year, talking to people about what they believe and why they believe it.
We get asked why we do Outreach. I could tell you that it’s about advancing the ideas of Humanism and rational thought, or that it’s about stimulating critical thinking skills in those who have not really thought about what they believe. I can explain that it’s about coming out; about letting folks in religious communities know there are many nonbelievers among them and that they should learn to accept them; and about developing a sense of community among local nonbelievers. It’s about all those things – but when it comes right down to it, it’s about people.
People like Ashley*, who writes:
“I’m willing to help out (with HAAM events) as long as it’s not a public contribution. My husband works for ———— in Winkler and I don’t want to make things any more difficult for him.”
Or the young lady, new in the area, who came to our booth to tell us how brave we are – a true compliment coming from a new immigrant who is both gay and an atheist living in Winkler.
We also get notes about the positive nature of our outreach from Christians who visit our booth.
“Hello, I just wanted to send you a quick message. You have a good debating style. I appreciate your candor and the respect you have for people who do not share your beliefs. It has been refreshing to dialogue with someone who doesn’t trash another’s beliefs. I just thought you should know. Not all Christians are mindless drones…though some are. Take care and have a great week!”
We hope to see you out there in Morden! Everyone’s welcome to hang out at the booth, so drop by to chat, or just listen in on the conversations if you’re curious. If you’re a member and have an interest in helping out at the booth, don’t hesitate to contact us. – Pat Morrow
