Is there a Right to be an A**hole? John Stuart Mill and the Limits of Expressive Liberty

November 18 @ 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm

There has been an increasing trend lately to deny (or try to deny) controversial figures the right to speak their views in public, either out of fear that they might offend certain segments of the population, or because their opinions are judged to be ‘hate speech’.

Such attempts at ‘de-platforming’ have affected such diverse speakers as Milo Yiannopoulos, Richard Dawkins, Richard Spencer, and Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

Do people have the right to not be offended?

Should there be limits to free speech? And if so, where do we draw the line?

We’ll welcome guest speaker Steve Lecce from the Centre for Professional and Applied Ethics at the U of M to address these questions. He’ll refer way back to Mill’s definitive 1859 book on human rights, On Liberty, to consider whether or not society can justify restricting ‘imbecilic and bastardly speech’.

Don’t miss what should be a lively discussion on this timely and important topic.

Charity of the Month

We will be collecting donations for the Christmas Cheer Board at this meeting.
